Of course, he was great. And Pushkin was, and Tolstoy. No one says they were bad writers - they wrote very well, and they knew how to use words to communicate desired messages. But the messages themselves don't make them great. And they aren't representatives of western culture's titans, c'mon. They are as westerns as I'm Stephen King. :)
