ask them how they feel about russia to lose the war. I bet they are "against the war" but, at the same time, they don't want their country to lose. :)

as for that "kid"... well, here we have a new generation growing up to join the rus army and come to kill a new generation of Ukrainians in a few years. Their school program is built on that: history lessons (telling the history the way THEY want) , "patriotic" education, etc. that kid isn't an exception; most of his pals would tell you the same...
